Our history
150 years shaping waste
Management
1875-1892
Foundations of modern waste collection
The first organised municipal waste collection systems in France and the early introduction of durable steel waste containers in Germany laid the foundation for modern waste collection infrastructure and structured urban waste management.
1951–1971
Compaction and efficiency in the Nordics
In the Nordics, companies such as San Sac and Orwak advanced waste compaction solutions, reducing volume, improving logistics efficiency and moving waste handling beyond simple collection.
1972–1995
Standardisation and system expansion
The 2-wheel bin, underground systems, sorting infrastructure and the first use of recycled materials established the core of modern waste management systems and early circular waste management.
1995–2018
Digitalisation and system integration
Identification, weighing systems and early digital technologies introduced more data-driven waste management, improving transparency, control and operational efficiency for collectors and municipalities.
2018–Today
SULO Group – building a European platform
With the creation of SULO Group, expertise from France, Germany and the Nordics was consolidated into a broader platform for waste containerization, compacting solutions, digital services and circular economy infrastructure.
The five pillars of the SULO ESG strategy
Building a culture of safety
SULO is a responsible company where safety is of the utmost priority. From a very early stage, selected teams have systematically focused on the safety of all production sites and coordinated the introduction of a health and safety management system. The aim was and remains to create a vibrant risk management culture to reduce accident rates and make it easier to comply with legislation while at the same time improving performance.
Reduction of the carbon footprint
We are committed to a validated SBTi near-term trajectory. In 2025, SULO received official SBTi approval for its greenhouse gas reduction targets. This means that we are now aligned with a 1.5°C pathway and have set science-based objectives across our entire value chain.
Our targets are to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 (baseline 2021), and to reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity by 51.6% per million euros of value added over the same period.
These objectives guide our operational decisions and our investment priorities. We continuously analyze and monitor our carbon footprint and deploy concrete action plans to ensure progress year after year.
Increase in the rate of recycled materials
In 2024, we achieved a significant milestone, reaching a recycled plastic rate of 80%.
Resources optimization
We are committed to fostering reuse, repair, and waste reduction. Each year, we implement continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing both waste generation and water consumption by at least 3% compared to the previous year.
Empowering Women, Embracing Diversity
Since 2021, we have increased the share of women in management positions to 34%. We are continuing this progress with the objective of reaching at least 50% in the long term, strengthening gender diversity and supporting the development of female leadership across the Group. Additionally, we are implementing region-specific initiatives to promote the inclusion of individuals with disabilities, actively engaging and supporting local foundations.
